October 28, 2019, Denton Officer Urbano (Urban) Rodriguez kissed his wife and children good bye on his way out the door for the overnight shift.  A few hours later, his wife was woken up to a knock at the door with the devastating news every police spouse fears and a nightmare he and his young family have not woken up from since.  Urban was shot twice--once in the head and once in the leg, by the passenger inside a car during routine traffic stop. Their journey since has been a story of unbelievable suffering--Urban had a portion of his skull removed to reduce the swelling in his brain during the original surgery to remove as many of the bullet fragments as possible, and was without this piece of his skull for months as he endured multiple infections and further brain surgeries.  The skull was then replaced by a titanium plate, another surgery.  Due to all of the trauma to his brain, his body was no longer able to process the spinal fluid from settling into his brain, so he had to endure yet another surgery to install a shunt into his brain.  He has also had a metal rod inserted all the way down his leg to replace his shattered femur.  After all of this, he has been left with a life altering, catastrophic Traumatic Brain Injury and paralysis on his right side. He is working hard at rehab, trying to retrain his brain to be able to fully walk again, and hopefully regain the use of his right arm. He also has trouble speaking, reading, writing, telling time, and short term memory issues. All because he pulled a car over.

Now that he and his family are back in Texas after several months out of state saving his life, the needs are many.  At the time of the shooting, Urban and his family lived in an apartment rent-free in exchange for his duties as courtesy officer for an apartment complex in Denton. However, now that he is unable to perform these duties, he and his family lost their apartment. They have found a rental home for now but need help paying the rent and daily expenses. Urban was the breadwinner for his wife and small children, ages 3 and 7. Now, their future is uncertain due to his catastrophic injuries. His wife Carrie is now full-time caregiver for Urban and the children.

This fundraiser is being organized by Carrie's sister, and all funds will go directly to Urban and his family.  Thank you so much for your support of this hero!
