Born a Fighter: Kiera's Journey

Kiera Adams came into this world on May 28th, 2024, arriving a month early via emergency C-section after her mother, Kelly, noticed a lack of fetal movement. Kiera was soon diagnosed with Intestinal Atresia, which led to Meconium Peritonitis — a dangerous condition involving the perforation of the intestines. Just three days after birth, Kiera underwent her first surgery, where doctors discovered she also had Short Bowel Syndrome. Unfortunately, due to the extensive damage, they were unable to reconnect her intestines or determine how much viable intestine she had.

Specialized Care in Boston

With no progress made in the first six weeks, Kiera’s parents, Doug and Kelly, made the incredibly difficult decision to transport her to Boston Children’s Hospital Center for Advanced Intestinal Rehabilitation, where she could receive the specialized care she desperately needs.

Doug, a newly promoted Lieutenant with the FDNY and former NYPD officer, has continued his duties in New York while attending Front Line Supervisor Training School five days a week. Every weekend, he travels to Boston to be with Kelly and Kiera. Kelly, a former EMT with the FDNY where she served as a dispatcher and training academy instructor, has put her life on hold, and rented an apartment in Boston to stay by Kiera’s side.

Kiera's Current Condition and Future Care

Doctors are giving Kiera’s body time to heal before they attempt additional surgeries to reconnect what remains of her viable intestine. For now, Kiera is receiving parenteral (IV) nutrition, a crucial lifeline that could either be a temporary measure or a long-term necessity, depending on how her condition progresses.

The road ahead is uncertain. Kiera may need multiple surgeries, ongoing reliance on IV nutrition, and an unknown level of care upon discharge. The emotional and financial toll on her family is immense, but their hope remains strong.
