Catastrophic Loss

Created September 17th, 2022

We are a small police department in Oakboro,NC and started our first ever K-9 unit almost 2 years ago. We have two dual purpose K-9’s (K-9 Joker & K-9 Bane), this became the first unit in the towns 106 year history. A few weeks ago during training, K-9 Joker became unsteady on his back legs, fell over and had problems walking. K-9 Joker was taken to the vet twice and we were referred to a specialist. He has undergone some testing and we are still awaiting results for one of them. If the second test comes back negative, we have to return for further evaluation and testing.

These medical expenses are adding up for our town, as our K-9 Unit is mainly funded through donations. We have depleted our funds and most of the reserve we had for the year. With the possibility of further medical expenses for K-9 Joker and our K-9 Unit, I was told to give this a try.

Any funds raised will go solely to K-9 Joker and his medical needs!

Had some conversation with the specialist that saw him and his primary vet this morning. He hasn’t had any progress to this point and he’s still dealing with an enlarged prostate, that’s causing him to have blood discharge. So we will be working towards addressing that soon. K-9 Joker is still taking his medication for another 2 1/2 weeks.

He did get out for some family time and visiting the kids at the town STEM school.

K-9 Joker was diagnosed with Lumbosacral Stenosis and is on a 4 week medication. We will be looking at a possible steroid injection if the medication doesn’t work for him. It is also possible that he could need surgery if these things don’t help correct it.
