Support the MTA Police Explorer’s Mission for Milena

Central Islip Teen Diagnosed with Breast Cancer

My name is Milena Garcia. I am a 17-year-old volleyball player, currently a Senior at Central Islip High School. I have been a part of the MTA Police Explorers, a safe space introducing me to new experiences and an extended family throughout my high school career. During my junior year of health class we were told about the importance of taking charge of our health and being our own best advocate with care, such as regular self checks for breast cancer. While we were taught how to perform a thorough personal exam and it was recommended to start early, it seemed so far removed from my reality. I didn’t take the advice seriously. I was a healthy, active young woman who would not be one to have cancer. I am responsible, hard-working and active in my community. I am a good student and a support to my family and friends. I have a plan for my future. Cancer was supposed to be for other people - older people, sick people or unlucky people. I was none of those things, until I wasn’t. I’m still not sure why I felt compelled after so months to take the step of giving myself an exam but I did. It changed my life and it may have saved it too. I felt a small lump in my breast and my heart sunk into my stomach thinking that it could be cancer. I waited for a few months not really able to face that reality before telling my parents. We saw the doctor immediately and in a whirlwind of tests and appointments there was a clear diagnosis. I, Milena, at 17, have breast cancer and need surgery. The costs and care are prohibitive for families like mine and the road may be long and difficult from the surgery itself to ongoing treatment and post operative care. I still try to enjoy every day even as I prepare for my surgery by continuing to focus on school, work, friends and family. I am thankful for my MTA Explorer family, Officers Matarazzo and Merkle and their network of trusted friends and adults who help lift me up, build my confidence and self esteem and offer me opportunities. They continue to show up to show me what is possible. With their support and yours - I believe I can beat this!!
