Scott Prater began his law enforcement career in 1995 as a part time jailer. Shortly after, he moved to full time jailer before later becoming a Road Deputy then a School Resource Officer. In 2007, he became the sole Narcotics Investigator for Smyth County Sheriff's Office. Scott found his passion in Narcotics work, working with numerous Federal agencies, Drug Task Forces, and local agencies in the region before later becoming a Task Force Officer with the DEA. Scott made the job look easy with his impressive memory and charismatic personality. Scott became a pillar in the field forming professional friendships in Smyth County and beyond. Becoming one of the first officers in the area to become Clandestine Lab Certified, Scott was always the first call when someone was needed to disassemble labs used to manufacture methamphetamine. Scott was also a mentor to Narcotics Investigators that followed him into the field, showing them the ropes in a kind and nurturing way, his knowledge and experience second to none. Scott had an infectious laugh that anyone who worked with him could recognize from down the hall. In 2021, Scott's love for kids and coaching led him back to the position of School Resource Officer, where he was actively working when he received devastating news.
In the early summer of 2023, at the age of just 51, Scott Prater was diagnosed with stage 4 gastric, liver, and bone cancer. Scott underwent chemotherapy for most of 2023. Scott remained positive, never faltering in his belief that he would return to work in 2024. Scott's attitude and determination marked him back on duty in January of this year. Suddenly Scott developed an allergic reaction which caused him to stop taking the treatment. Within the last 3 months, the cancer has spread to his brain.
As dedicated as Scott was to his career, he has been even more dedicated to his family. He and his wife, Angie, have been married for 23 years, and have two daughters, Jordan and Madison. Scott also has his first grandson on the way.
Scott has selflessly given most of his adult life to serving his community. He is continuing the fight, and he and his family need all the support we can give. Thanks so much.
