Crossing Guard Fatally Struck by Driver Allegedly Under the Influence
John was struck while performing his duties protecting children in Merrick on February 26,2026. Sadly, John has passed away from his injuries.
Crossing Guards serve our communities with courage and dedication. They dedicate themselves to standing in the roadway to protect our children and residents. John has answered that call of service always with a smile and a kind word. His commitment will never be forgotten.
God Bless John and his family at this very difficult time.
May he rest in eternal peace.

John not only protected the children who were crossing. Every morning I waited at the light to turn left onto merrick road and saw how friendly and happy he was to also cross the adult pedestrians. He’d fist pound, greet them with a smile or even a warm pat on their backs. You saw how loved he was/is in the Merrick community. Although I’ve never even spoken to him (always in my car)- I started waving to join in on the friendliness. He is greatly missed by all. He always, always went above and beyond to make the side walks… even with all the snow… safe for whoever needed to cross. It was obvious how deeply he cared for all who needed to cross.
