Their story

Help Deputy Chief David Nida Get His Urgently Needed Biopsy

For nearly 12 years, David has answered the call to serve others. Today, he needs others to answer his.

My name is Heidi Nida, and I'm asking for help for my husband, David.

David is 55, my husband of 28 years, a father of three, a proud grandfather, and the Deputy Chief of Police in Hawk Cove, Texas. He has devoted 11 years and 8 months to law enforcement.

But David is far more than the badge he wears.

His longtime friend and colleague of approximately 25 years, Danny Grogan, describes him as someone who is “generous with his time and enjoys making a difference in everything he does.”

Wanda Crowder, a Hawk Cove resident since 2010, says, “I always feel safer when I know our Deputy Chief is on duty.”

Patricia McKeehan, who previously worked at City Hall, shares that David has even spent his own money purchasing things for his department. She describes a man who treats people fairly, shows kindness, and goes out of his way for those in need.

And fellow officer Lorna Yarbrough, whose training David helped with, remembers learning patience and understanding from him. She says she knew “he had my 6 when we worked together.”

These are the qualities I've witnessed throughout our 32 years together. David has spent much of his life working, protecting, providing, and helping others.

Now, he needs help himself.

A serious medical discovery

For years, David has carefully monitored elevated PSA levels with his doctors. Recently, a prostate MRI revealed a 2.4-centimeter lesion classified as PI-RADS 5, the highest category of suspicion for clinically significant prostate cancer.

David has not been diagnosed with cancer. That is precisely why the next step is so important.

His urologist has recommended an MRI-ultrasound fusion biopsy at the earliest available opportunity. We are working toward December 11, 2026, and urgently need to raise the necessary funds in time to pay for the procedure on that date.

His doctor originally wanted the biopsy performed on November 13, but the unexpected cost forced us to postpone it until the next available appointment.

Every delay means more time without the answers his doctors need.

How we reached this point

In 2024, after nearly two decades of employment, David lost his longtime software development job when his position was outsourced.

He kept working in law enforcement and taking additional assignments to support our family. But losing that income dramatically changed our financial circumstances.

We eventually could no longer afford COBRA coverage, and our retirement savings have been exhausted. Although we now have Marketplace health insurance, the facility for David's recommended biopsy is out of network.

We face an estimated $10,000 medical expense that we cannot manage alone. We're contributing what we can, including selling a family vehicle to help pay for his care.

Now it's our turn to ask

Asking for help is unfamiliar and difficult for us. But sometimes the people who have spent years answering calls for help need someone to stand beside them.

We don't know what David's biopsy will reveal or what comes next. Right now, we're simply trying to obtain the answers he needs without another financial delay.

If you're able to donate, any amount would mean so much to our family. If you cannot, sharing his story would be an enormous kindness.

And whether you give, share, or simply keep David in your prayers, we're sincerely grateful.

Thank you for helping us take this important next step.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Heidi Nida

An Important Update on David's Biopsy
I'm grateful to share that David's MRI-ultrasound fusion biopsy is now officially scheduled for Friday, December 11, 2026, at 11:00 AM.
We've made the initial $1,968 payment to secure his appointment, leaving approximately $8,032 of the estimated $10,000 procedure cost still to cover.
There may be additional anesthesia-related charges, and we're still working to confirm those details. For now, our focus remains on making sure David receives his biopsy as scheduled, without another financial delay.
Thank you to everyone who has helped, reached out, shared our story, or kept us in your prayers. Your kindness means more than words can express.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Heidi Nida
