Grandfather thought it was a good idea at the time and not totally understanding how a reverse mortgage really works. He used the money to take care of debt but, didn't know he had to pay it back to keep his home. He has had  rough go after his wife passed 3 yrs ago with dementia, and now he has dementia and extremely bad case of COPD.
