First Responders
Medical
Dedicated to decades of selflessly serving both "NYPD", retiring as a Detective, and his community as a volunteer in the "FRANKLIN SQUARE AND MUNSON FIRE DEPARTMENT", rising up to the rank of Captain of Engine Co. #1.Mike Kelly was a first responder on 9/11 under both capacities for 3+ months. Much of that time he worked on the pile that has left him multiple certified illnesses that he suffers and struggles with today.
Mike served on the executive board of the "COMMUNITY LEAGUE OF GARDEN CITY SOUTH", a Civic that serves residents & merchants in Franklin Square School District #17, for 7 years. In addition he also served as 1st V.P. of the SONS OF ITALY AMERICA LODGE #2245, for 2 terms (4 years).
First & foremost, Mike Kelly is a family man. Married to his wife, Marge, for nearly 33 years, he's a proud dad of 2 sons, Michael Philip (FDNY EMS DRILL INSTRUCTOR & Combat Veteran USMC SGT) & Christopher. Mike (Public Safety Officer) as well as an adoring Grandpa of his 4 yr old grandson, Killian Cayden.
On December 27th, 2023, his as well as his whole family's, world was shattered when it was determined that Mike was in dire need of a life sustaining liver transplant.
He received 59 blood transfusions and was hospitalized 9 times, averaging 2 weeks per admission, between 12/27/23 & 6/23/2024. Each time, he was admitted, he received blood transfusions, as well as other blood additives, and procedures to stop internal bleeding due to end stage liver disease. A disease not yet recognized by the 9/11 foundation.
With dangerously low blood supplies, his family & friends held a blood drive in his name to address the shortage of blood. 92 Units replenished the NY blood banks.
On July 12, 2024, a donor match was found, and Mike received a new liver at NYU LANGONE KIMMEL CENTER in Manhattan.
As Mike recovers, the bills are mounting. The unexpected expense for his family traveling to Manhattan to be with him daily, added to the tally.
Weekly follow-up visits in the city (tolls & parking), co-pays for lifelong anti-rejection medications , follow up diagnostic co-pays and the anticipated additional, soon to start coming medical bills, along with the day to day expenses of owning a house and supporting a family in Nassau County, NY. fill Mike with anxiety.
Since the age of 18, Mike has selflessly given so much to his community. To be able to set his mind free of financial weight would allow him to re-focus on his healing during this long recovery.
No amount is too small to lessen the financial load.
We know the economy is difficult for so many, so if you're unable to contribute, sharing this page is greatly appreciated.
Prayers are always welcome and a huge plus for a full and complete recovery for Mike Kelly.
THANK YOU!
