SUMMARY

I am raising $5,250 to surprise my active-duty Marine son with a reliable vehicle this Christmas. His beloved 2004 Honda Element suffered a catastrophic engine failure right before his graduation, and these funds will cover a low-mileage JDM engine and transmission replacement along with professional mechanic labor.

MY STORY

Surprising My Marine Son with a JDM Engine Swap for His Beloved Honda Element

Hi everyone,

I am reaching out to our community, friends, and family to help me pull off a special Christmas surprise for my son, who is currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Marines. Words cannot express how incredibly proud I am of him and the man he has become. Watching him step up to serve our country has been the honor of my life, and I want to show him that same level of dedication while he is away.

The Story of His Favorite Car

My son worked hard to buy his very first car: a 2004 Honda Element. He absolutely loves this car. For a while, he traveled out of state and even lived out of this Element for a couple of months before returning home to answer a higher calling and enlist in the Marine Corps. I was so proud of his independence then, and even prouder when he chose to wear the uniform.

When he left for training, he generously told me I could use his car if I ever needed it. Being a blue-collar worker who works with my hands, my own work vehicle takes a beating. When my car needed repairs, I borrowed his Element for a short time. Once my car was fixed, I parked his Honda to preserve it so it would be ready and waiting for him when he came home.

The Breakdown

Right around his Marine graduation day—a day where my heart was absolutely bursting with pride—my own car broke down yet again. I had originally planned to use that time to surprise him by cleaning up his Element—restoring the headlights, putting on a new serpentine belt, and handling some minor cosmetic fixes so it would look great for him.

Instead, I had to use his car to get to work. Just a few days before his graduation, on my way to work, the Element broke down on me.

Because he bought the car with nearly 300,000 miles on it, the original motor and transmission had already seen a lot of life. When the mechanic inspected it, we found out the timing chain had snapped, causing the pistons to hit the valves, and the head gasket was leaking into the motor. The engine was completely done.

A Marine's Spirit and a Parent's Mission

After graduating, he came home for a week before heading out for his next phase of advanced military training. He had been looking forward to driving his car more than almost anything else. When I told him it broke, I expected him to be crushed. Instead, true to his character, he didn't seem bothered at all and was completely understanding. Seeing his maturity and resilience made me even more profoundly proud to be his parent.

But it bothered me deeply. I feel terrible that I was the last one driving his favorite car when it gave out.

The Christmas Surprise Plan (The JDM Swap)

He has absolutely no idea I am setting up this page. I want to surprise him when he comes home for leave around Christmas with a running, reliable vehicle.

I have done the research and found the most cost-effective way to bring his Element back to life. I plan to purchase a JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) motor and transmission . These are high-quality, used imported engines from Japan that only have between 40,000 and 65,000 miles on them—meaning it will give his car a massive second lease on life.

Because I work with my hands, I understand the scope of this project, but I cannot do it alone. I need to hire a professional mechanic to perform the engine swap, take the necessary American external components from the old engine, and transfer them over to the new JDM motor.

How You Can Help

Every dollar raised through this page will go directly toward:

  1. Purchasing the low-mileage JDM replacement engine and transmission .
  2. Professional mechanic labor costs to perform the swap and external conversion.
  3. The minor cosmetic updates (headlight restoration, new wiper blades, and plastic trim restoration ) I originally wanted to give him.

Any contribution, big or small, will help me give this incredibly hardworking Marine the homecoming surprise he deserves. Thank you so much for your support, your sharing, and for helping me honor a son I am so deeply proud of!
